5th Street Building

The old Lewisburg Builder's Supply Store and Warehouse were purchased in 1993 when Lewisburg Builder's Supply relocated to a new facility. The intention of the purchase was to give the William Cameron Engine Company room to expand. Beginning in 1993, CVC Contractors was hired to create a layout in the new building that encompassed several ideas.

The objectives given to the contractors were widespread. The WCEC wanted a multipurpose building that could provide adequate space for training classes, space for general membership meetings, space for smaller board meetings, and office areas for all officers/committees. The first design encompassed all of these specifications, with the following additions: an exercise/ weight room with showers and lockers, and a kids room for those firefighters with children when responding to alarms, and an antiques showcase for the multiple fire apparatus that the WCEC owns.

The initial project was a multi-phase construction, with many smaller scale additions being made at different times. The funding for the project was going to be dealt with as such, when enough funding was appropriated for the next section, the next phase was completed. Although a costly way of doing construction, it allowed the flexibility of putting forward what we needed most.

Ultimately, after several revisions, by several different project supervisors (members of WCEC), and the untimely closing of the prime contractor, it was decided to start construction on the project in 1998. This solved several immediate issues for the fire department, including creating much needed parking, and removing a public eyesore (the old and then very deteriorated Lewisburg Builders Supply building).

The first phase of the project included general demolition of the part of the warehouse that was to become the parking lot, and many exterior renovations to clean up the appearance of the building. The highlight of this phase was the creation of the façade to be a replica of the old firehouse that was once located in downtown Lewisburg. The first phase was completed in September of 1999.

The next phase of the project began in June of 2000, and includes interior renovation work. At the end of this phase, the training classrooms, and the antiques foyer will be completed.

Funding for the project is coming from several sources. First, we initiated a five-year program for the general public to provide donations specifically for the project. In addition, there are available spaces for plaques that will be located in different locations throughout the building. Second, beginning this year, businesses will have the opportunity to fully fund a "room" in the new building. Each room will have a plaque designating who pledged the funding for the completion of each room. It is our hope to have the entire building project paid for by donations.
